Drawing as Monoprinting
Looking at portraiture as a means to develop the student's Eye while also teaching the basics of Relief printing. Through a series of direct drawing exercises using mirrors and transparent overlays the student's confidence and ability to 'see' is enhanced. These drawings are then taken as prompts to develop a series of Monoprints, an introduction to Relief printing that rewards spontaneity. This is also a way to begin developing an understanding of positive/negative space before commencing other printmaking and print based projects.
Utilizing the self portrait in student artworks allows for themes of identity and self, of reflexivity and metacognition to be drawn out and expanded upon in discussion around these artworks and process.
