CUBIST PHOTO COLLAGE

CUBIST PHOTO COLLAGE

An exploration of the ideas that underpin the ideas of early Cubism and Dada, examining works like Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase, Picasso's Weeping Woman and Hoch's self portraits. After a class discussion on what these works entail aesthetically and conceptually we embark on creating our own using photo collage. Students use their device or a camera procured by the teacher to take images of themselves and each other to be printed out and collaged.

These classes sit as part of a larger examination of representation and meaning in art. Focus in these lessons is to look not only to the aesthetic and style of past movements from the 20th century but to understand their motivations and ideas. Picasso is a problematic figure to include without discussion, there are other ways to approach ideas of 3D/2D space, time dilation and deconstruction of a figure without including his work.
