3D Objects in VCD

3D CERAMIC MILK CARTONS FROM 2D PACKAGING DESIGN NET
Introduction to Ceramics as a material in its own right and function as design tool. Students will use the material and methods to convert and troubleshoot a plan of their own from the previous unit where they formulated a packaging design for a different material (paper)
Lesson will focus on basic clay handling techniques, problem solving and evaluating design choices while constructing, and analyzing different choices made by the students peers after construction is finished.
At the end of the sequence students should be able to demonstrate:
- Collaborative problem solving. The packaging net provided was meant to be used for constructing a paper or card milk carton. I want the students to work in pairs to solve the problems created by using a building material 10 times thicker than allowed for in the instructions (10mm thick clay slab instead of 1mm thick card) while still creating an object that has the correct external dimensions.
- Knowledge of working with Clay.
- Development of technical skill in using Clay slabs to construct an object.
- Ability to conceptualise deconstructed 2D drawings as whole 3D object.
