Learning to See, and translating visual data into Line

Positive/Negative Space, and the dynamic between them

The Material Practices of the discipline, specifically Relief printing, Stencils and Intaglio

The ideas of the Multiple, the Edition and Print Object

THRESHOLD CONCEPTS/CORE SKILLS
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS/IDEAS

How do you translate a drawing or idea into a printed object?

How do you create meaning from pattern and shape?

What are the differences between the mediums? What do they communicate visually?

If there are multiple prints of an image, where is the 'Original'? Is this idea relevant to Printmaking? Is this idea relevant to Print Based Artworks and what's the difference?

POTENTIAL TASKS

MONOPRINTING/DRAWING

Presuming Students are beginning their Arts Education with Drawing as a foundation, carrying these skills and ideas into a Monoprinting exercise is an ideal way to introduce Relief printing. Learning to work clean early is a key skill and Monoprinting is a safe, accessible way to become familiar with the process. While experimenting with technique, Students will also be working through ideas of Identity and expression of Self.

RELIEF PRINTING

'Eyes", Monoprint 2017

"Highscore" Woodblock 2009, Sean Starwars

Starting with the loosely organized Outlaw Printmaker movement from America, specifically Sean Starwars, students are introduced to Lino/Woodblock printing. Starting with single colour imagery, students will be encouraged to work up to multicolour prints, either through reduction or multiple plates. The ideas running through this project is to reflect the environment and everyday lives of the students, how they see the world and perceive reality.  Compare the work of Sean Starwars to SWOON and her flotilla actions, looking for the point where the  printed object to become an interactive, physical force. A component of a greater whole, dependent on space and context

INTAGLIO

"Untitled" Etching 2016, Carolyn Hawkins

Continuing with the theme of Identity and Representation of Self, the work of Melbourne based Artist Carolyn Hawkins will be used to introduce Intaglio printing (presuming there is an etching press available). Drawing on the everyday surroundings and using the everyday collections we form to create a portrait of a person. Students can create drawings collaged onto transparent acetate before printing and editioning. A potential Artist Exchange can be run with this exercise.

ARTIST BOOKS

Drawing on the collections of the State Library of Victoria and Sticky Institute, Students will use their their Artistry and skills to create Artist Books and/or Zines to express an idea or as artifact of a research project. By using these as not only an Art object but end result of a process of research and development, of ideation, the students can be asked to evidence their learning not by completing a worksheet, but by demonstrating their understandings not only of Printmaking but of other fields of study through a completed piece of Artistry
