PRINTMAKING SCHEMA 9/10

Developing the skills to communicate and interpret Ideas through Visual Art

Developing the visual literacy to understand the context and meaning behind Artworks

Learning to look beyond the visual and understand the importance of Context in Artworks

The power of repetition and mass production

Understanding the difference between Art, Design and Craft is often blurred, and that Artists often straddle multiple roles in their practice

THRESHOLD CONCEPTS/CORE SKILLS
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS/IDEAS

How do Artists use print media to create Artworks?

How does repetition of Imagery and Ideas shape our thoughts, not just in Artwork but in everyday life?

How does Symbolism play a role in Contemporary Art?

PERPETUATING STEROTYPES

Drawing on recent exhibitions at the NGV and ACCA from BROOK ANDREW and KADER ATTIA, Students will examine the way mass media is used to perpetuate stereotypes and cartoon depictions of humanity for other's gain. By continually repeating the same idea and imagery it becomes held as a 'true' idea among the target audience. In this age of misinformation and Fake News it's vital to teach an understanding of this means of communication, and also the importance of counteracting it through Art. Another Artist of note working in this collection methodology is PHUONG NGO, specifically the Vietnam Archive Project.

SCREENPRINTING/TEXTILE DESIGN

"The Construction of Fear: A Culture of Evil" 2013 Installation Kader Attia

Shop Display, NMBQ 2017

Using Brunswick based fashion boutique New Model Beauty Queen as a starting point, Students will be asked to not only develop their skills in Screenprinting, but to also explore the greater affects related to fast fashion and consumer culture. Straddling the divide between Art and VCD, this is a way to bridge the two worlds. When Designers develop a conscious and Artists want to express themselves in a manner less esoteric. A study guide designed to teach VCE Design Industry Practice is useful, and can be found here.

EXCHANGE/INSTALLATION

"Pigeon feeding family - Brooklyn" woodblock/pasteup  2005, Swoon

Using the Student's developed skills as Artists, examine the practices of street and installation artists with Print backgrounds to create site specific Artworks. Swoon is an excellent example to draw from, as is Wolfbat Studio along with Miso & Ghost Patrol's earlier work. Not only do printed objects take on new meaning depending on their context, but the ability to produce multiples of each allows for different readings depending on the site.

DIGITAL SPACES

Contemporary Printmaking is fighting to claim Digital Prints as part of their artform. The historicity of the medium would lead to a conclusion that a means of production can only become Artful once it's commercially irrelevant (contentious). However, creating digital artworks and formatting for print is a skill that falls within the domain of Printmaking. Adobe Creative Suite is a powerful tool set that can allow for near limitless expression, but understanding the difference between a piece of art made by hand and one created on a screen is important to hold. There are also requirements to teach about Copyright, Fair Use, Open Source, the Ethics of appropriation and almost everything else that goes with Digital Literacy. One way to explore this would be to conduct an Augmented Reality project, as described under the 'Digital/Physical' section of this site, but also linked here.

""AR experiment, Stawell" GIF 2017

EXCURSION/S

Sites of specific importance to visit would be Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, where students could visit the Australian Print Workshop, Spacecraft Store + Studio and the Port Jackson Press to view the Collection. The State Library has an extensive collection of Artist Books, and the NGVI provides curated viewings of their Print Collection. NMBQ, Killer Merch and RMIT Brunswick are all within walking distance of each other and would provide an excellent overview of textile screenprinting
